If a 20-lb grill tank or patio-heater cylinder is empty along the Wasatch Front, Maps often sends you to a locked cage in a grocery or big-box lot on State Street, Redwood, or the 215. That cage is usually an exchange: you leave your cylinder and take a different, prefilled one. A refill puts propane into your tank — attendant or pay-at-pump — billed for gallons added.

This page is for Salt Lake City, Murray, West Valley, Woods Cross, Clinton, Stansbury Park, and Saratoga Springs people who want that refill: U-Haul stations whose location pages say Tank Refills, Blue Star Gas’s Salt Lake branch page that lists propane gas refills, and Tractor Supply stores whose pages list propane tank refill. It is not a map of every cage in Salt Lake County, and it is not a price board. Call before you drive. Provo / Orem and Ogden / Clearfield U-Haul rows are other metros. Shorter grill season than the Sun Belt still leaves January empty-cage misses — refill still matters.

How refill differs from exchange

Refill Exchange (cage)
What happens Your tank is filled You leave your tank / take a different one
Billing Usually by the gallon (or weight) for gas added Flat fee per tank
Typical 20-lb fill Filled toward legal capacity (OPD / 80% rules apply) Often a lighter net weight printed on the cage (commonly ~15 lb — check the cage label)
Larger tanks / RV Many refill stations handle 30–100 lb and RVs Usually 20-lb grill cylinders only
Tank age / damage Station can refuse an out-of-date or damaged cylinder Exchange may take a worn tank and give you another

Salt Lake–area U-Haul refill pages state that refilling is cheaper than exchange and that exchange does not credit leftover propane in the tank you turn in. Gallon prices on those pages change; omitted from cards. Blue Star’s branch page lists refill and a dispenser — confirm walk-up cylinder fill vs cardlock before you drive.

Verified refill locations (Salt Lake City metro)

Only stations with a public page that describes refill (not exchange-only). Hours below are office / store / published fill hours from those pages — propane attendant coverage can be shorter; call ahead. Gallon prices are omitted; they change.

Pins mark stations we could place from the listed street address. Click a pin to jump to that card. Stations without a pin still list below.

Not listed (on purpose): grocery / big-box Blue Rhino–style cages unless a page explicitly says they also refill. Wasatch Propane — first-party site mentions a gas-island refill but publishes no street address this pass (same omit rule as no-address plants elsewhere). Utah LP Gas MapQuest listings without a first-party walk-up refill page. U-Haul Provo Cougar Blvd, Clearfield Sunset, and Ogden Wall Ave are other metros. Tractor Supply Heber / Orem / West Haven stay on other tables if opened later. Live gallon prices change; omitted from cards.

What to check before you drive

  1. Refill ≠ exchange. If the pin is only a cage with a card reader and no attendant fill, you are in exchange territory.
  2. Call ahead. Ask: “Do you refill my tank today, what sizes, and is someone available now?” Tractor Supply refill depends on staff; Blue Star plant hours were not on the branch page this pass.
  3. Bring the empty (or low) tank you own. Refill keeps your cylinder; exchange swaps it.
  4. Read the collar date. DOT cylinders must be requalified within 12 years of manufacture (then again per method).
  5. Look for OPD. Cylinders up through 40 lb propane capacity generally need an Overfill Prevention Device valve.
  6. Condition matters. Excessive rust/pitting, dents/bulges/cuts, damaged collar/footring, or a bad valve.
  7. Expect a partial “full.” Legal fill leaves vapor space (~80%).
  8. Altitude / winter. Patio heaters and RV tanks still need refill in shoulder season — call ahead when snow or holiday hours shrink attendant coverage.

Call-ahead script

“Hi — I’m looking to refill my own tank, not exchange. Do you refill today? What sizes? Do you fill RVs? Is someone at the pump now?”

Common rejection rules (cite, don’t invent)

From U.S. DOT / PHMSA consumer guide Is Your Cylinder Safe to Fill? (PDF):

From North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services LP-Gas consumer FAQ (plain-language industry practice summary; same DOT/OPD themes) (page): turn-downs include out-of-date collar, missing required OPD (cylinders up to and including 40 lb), damage/corrosion, loose/damaged collar or foot ring, damaged valve. A “full” 20-lb grill cylinder is limited by OPD / expansion space; exchange cabinets often sell lighter net weights than a proper refill.
