If a 20-lb grill tank is empty in the Treasure Valley, Maps often sends you to a locked cage in a grocery or big-box lot on Fairview, Overland, or Caldwell Blvd. That cage is usually an exchange: you leave your cylinder and take a different, prefilled one. A refill puts propane into your tank — attendant or pay-at-pump — billed for gallons added.
This page is for Boise, Garden City, Nampa, Caldwell, Kuna, Middleton, and Emmett people who want that refill: U-Haul stations whose location pages say Tank Refills, Airgas branches whose pages list propane filling, and Tractor Supply stores whose pages list propane tank refill. It is not a map of every cage in Ada / Canyon County, and it is not a price board. Call before you drive. This is not a U-Haul-only dump — TSC rim stores and Airgas fill lines are required for completeness.
How refill differs from exchange
Boise-area U-Haul refill pages state that refilling is cheaper than exchange and that exchange does not credit leftover propane in the tank you turn in. Gallon prices on those pages change; omitted from cards. Airgas pages say they will fill most propane tanks — confirm grill-cylinder walk-up vs industrial cylinders.
Verified refill locations (Boise metro)
Only stations with a public page that describes refill (not exchange-only). Hours below are office / store / published fill hours from those pages — propane attendant coverage can be shorter; call ahead. Gallon prices are omitted; they change.
Pins mark stations we could place from the listed street address. Click a pin to jump to that card. Stations without a pin still list below.

Not listed (on purpose): grocery / big-box Blue Rhino–style cages unless a page explicitly says they also refill. Zamzows company propane page says bulk refill at all stores except Lake Hazel, but first-party pages opened this pass did not publish street numbers for each store (Stockist locator is JS-only) — omitted until a first-party address page is opened. Tractor Supply Nampa #3172 store page did not list propane tank refill among store services this pass (Pet Wash / Garden Center only). Valley Wide / Maverik “propane” pins without a first-party refill URL. Live gallon prices change; omitted from cards.
What to check before you drive
- Refill ≠ exchange. If the pin is only a cage with a card reader and no attendant fill, you are in exchange territory.
- Call ahead. Ask: “Do you refill my tank today, what sizes, and is someone available now?” Airgas Boise publishes weekday daytime store hours; propane coverage can be shorter.
- Bring the empty (or low) tank you own. Refill keeps your cylinder; exchange swaps it.
- Read the collar date. DOT cylinders must be requalified within 12 years of manufacture (then again per method).
- Look for OPD. Cylinders up through 40 lb propane capacity generally need an Overfill Prevention Device valve.
- Condition matters. Excessive rust/pitting, dents/bulges/cuts, damaged collar/footring, or a bad valve.
- Expect a partial “full.” Legal fill leaves vapor space (~80%).
- Sizes / RV. U-Haul pages say ~3–100 lb portable plus RVs/campers; Airgas and Tractor Supply store pages do not state sizes — call.
Call-ahead script
“Hi — I’m looking to refill my own tank, not exchange. Do you refill today? What sizes? Do you fill RVs? Is someone at the pump now?”
Common rejection rules (cite, don’t invent)
From U.S. DOT / PHMSA consumer guide Is Your Cylinder Safe to Fill? (PDF):
- Do not fill cylinders with excessive rust/corrosion/pitting, dents/bulges/cuts/cracks, missing/damaged footring, neckring/collar, or valve cover, or leaking/defective valve or relief device.
- Check manufacture / requalification dates; cylinders must be requalified within 12 years of manufacture (then per marking — e.g. “E” visual often means 5 years).
From North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services LP-Gas consumer FAQ (plain-language industry practice summary; same DOT/OPD themes) (page): turn-downs include out-of-date collar, missing required OPD (cylinders up to and including 40 lb), damage/corrosion, loose/damaged collar or foot ring, damaged valve.
