If a 20-lb grill tank is empty in Fresno heat, the closest pin on Maps is often a metal cage outside a grocery or big-box store on Blackstone, Shaw, or Kings Canyon. That cage is usually an exchange: you swap tanks and leave with a prefilled cylinder. A refill is different — an attendant (or a certified pay-at-pump) puts propane into your cylinder and you pay for what goes in.

This page is for Fresno–Clovis people who want a refill: U-Haul propane stations on Blackstone and Kings Canyon, Tractor Supply stores that list “propane tank refill,” and Ace pages that list refill (not exchange-only). It is not a complete map of every cage in Fresno County, and it is not a price board. Call before you drive. Madera TSC is on the north rim; Visalia Mineral King and Bakersfield U-Haul are other pages. Sacramento is a different page.

How refill differs from exchange

Refill Exchange (cage)
What happens Your tank is filled You leave your tank / take a different one
Billing Usually by the gallon (or weight) for gas added Flat fee per tank
Typical 20-lb fill Filled toward legal capacity (OPD / 80% rules apply) Often a lighter net weight printed on the cage (commonly ~15 lb — check the cage label)
Larger tanks / RV Many refill stations handle 30–100 lb and RVs Usually 20-lb grill cylinders only
Tank age / damage Station can refuse an out-of-date or damaged cylinder Exchange may take a worn tank and give you another

Fresno-area U-Haul refill pages state that refilling is cheaper than exchange and that exchange does not credit leftover propane in the tank you turn in. Gallon prices on those pages change; omitted from cards. Ace rows are mixed refill-or-exchange language — call and ask for refill.

Verified refill locations (Fresno metro)

Only stations with a public page that describes refill (not exchange-only). Hours below are office / store / published fill hours from those pages — propane attendant coverage can be shorter; call ahead. Gallon prices are omitted; they change.

Pins mark stations we could place from the listed street address. Click a pin to jump to that card. Stations without a pin still list below.

Not listed (on purpose): grocery / big-box Blue Rhino–style cages unless a page explicitly says they also refill. Ferrellgas Reedley (20511 E Adams Ave) — official page: this location is not open to the public. U-Haul at Mineral King (Visalia), U-Haul of Merced, and U-Haul of Southside / White Ln (Bakersfield) are other metros. Tractor Supply Fresno #2194 on N Brawley was not added: this pass did not capture that store page’s own “propane tank refill” line (only a nearby-store listing). Clovis Ace Hardware (1890 Shaw) store services did not list propane refill this pass. AmeriGas Fresno/Clovis service-area pages did not yield a walk-up cylinder-refill address. Live gallon prices change; omitted from cards.

What to check before you drive

  1. Refill ≠ exchange. If the pin is only a cage with a card reader and no attendant fill, you are in exchange territory. Ace NE Fresno’s operator page lists Propane-Exchange — confirm refill.
  2. Call ahead. Ask: “Do you refill my tank today, what sizes, and is someone available now?” Tractor Supply refill depends on staff; store hours ≠ pump hours.
  3. Bring the empty (or low) tank you own. Refill keeps your cylinder; exchange swaps it.
  4. Read the collar date. DOT cylinders must be requalified within 12 years of manufacture (then again per method).
  5. Look for OPD. California fill stations follow the same OPD / 80% rules as other states for portable cylinders.
  6. Condition matters. Excessive rust/pitting, dents/bulges/cuts, damaged collar/footring, or a bad valve.
  7. Expect a partial “full.” Legal fill leaves vapor space (~80%).
  8. Sizes. Ask about 20 / 30 / 40 / 100 lb and whether they fill RV ASME tanks — U-Haul pages say ~3–100 lb portable plus RVs/campers; Tractor Supply store pages do not state sizes (company refill page says up to 100 lb / many stores fill RVs — call).

Call-ahead script

“Hi — I’m looking to refill my own tank, not exchange. Do you refill today? What sizes? Do you fill RVs? Is someone at the pump now?”

Common rejection rules (cite, don’t invent)

From U.S. DOT / PHMSA consumer guide Is Your Cylinder Safe to Fill? (PDF):

California fill stations follow the same OPD / 80% expansion-space rules as other states for portable cylinders. A “full” 20-lb grill cylinder is limited by that valve; exchange cabinets often sell lighter net weights than a proper refill.
