If a 20-lb grill tank is empty before an I-80 cookout or a lake weekend, Maps often sends you to a locked cage in a grocery or Hy-Vee / big-box lot on Center, Dodge, or 72nd. That cage is usually an exchange: you leave your cylinder and take a different, prefilled one. A refill puts propane into your tank — attendant or pay-at-pump — billed for gallons added.

This page is for Omaha, Council Bluffs, and Fremont people who want that refill: U-Haul stations whose location pages say Tank Refills, and Tractor Supply stores whose pages list propane tank refill. Council Bluffs rows sit on this page (Omaha metro), not on a separate Iowa stub. It is not a downtown-only table, and it is not a price board. Call before you drive. Lincoln is another metro.

How refill differs from exchange

Refill Exchange (cage)
What happens Your tank is filled You leave your tank / take a different one
Billing Usually by the gallon (or weight) for gas added Flat fee per tank
Typical 20-lb fill Filled toward legal capacity (OPD / 80% rules apply) Often a lighter net weight printed on the cage (commonly ~15 lb — check the cage label)
Larger tanks / RV Many refill stations handle 30–100 lb and RVs Usually 20-lb grill cylinders only
Tank age / damage Station can refuse an out-of-date or damaged cylinder Exchange may take a worn tank and give you another

Omaha-area U-Haul refill pages state that refilling is cheaper than exchange and that exchange does not credit leftover propane in the tank you turn in. Gallon prices on those pages change; omitted from cards. U-Haul Moving & Storage of North Downtown (1006 N 18th St) is Tank Exchange only on the Omaha propane locator — not in this table.

Verified refill locations (Omaha metro (NE–IA))

Only stations with a public page that describes refill (not exchange-only). Hours below are office / store / published fill hours from those pages — propane attendant coverage can be shorter; call ahead. Gallon prices are omitted; they change.

Pins mark stations we could place from the listed street address. Click a pin to jump to that card. Stations without a pin still list below.

Not listed (on purpose): grocery / big-box Blue Rhino–style cages unless a page explicitly says they also refill. U-Haul Moving & Storage of North Downtown (1006 N 18th St, Omaha, NE 68102) — official propane locator lists Tank Exchange (not Tank Refills). Westlake Ace Omaha / Ralston operator pages were not opened as refill-confirmed this pass. Lincoln is another metro. Live gallon prices change; omitted from cards.

What to check before you drive

  1. Refill ≠ exchange. If the pin is only a cage with a card reader and no attendant fill, you are in exchange territory. North Downtown U-Haul is exchange-only — skip it for refill.
  2. Call ahead. Ask: “Do you refill my tank today, what sizes, and is someone available now?” Tractor Supply refill depends on staff.
  3. Bring the empty (or low) tank you own. Refill keeps your cylinder; exchange swaps it.
  4. Read the collar date. DOT cylinders must be requalified within 12 years of manufacture (then again per method).
  5. Look for OPD. Cylinders up through 40 lb propane capacity generally need an Overfill Prevention Device valve.
  6. Condition matters. Excessive rust/pitting, dents/bulges/cuts, damaged collar/footring, or a bad valve.
  7. Expect a partial “full.” Legal fill leaves vapor space (~80%).
  8. RV / I-80. Ask whether they fill RV ASME tanks — U-Haul pages list RVs/campers; TSC store pages do not state RV fill (company FAQ says many stores do — call).

Call-ahead script

“Hi — I’m looking to refill my own tank, not exchange. Do you refill today? What sizes? Do you fill RVs? Is someone at the pump now?”

Common rejection rules (cite, don’t invent)

From U.S. DOT / PHMSA consumer guide Is Your Cylinder Safe to Fill? (PDF):

From North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services LP-Gas consumer FAQ (plain-language industry practice summary; same DOT/OPD themes) (page): turn-downs include out-of-date collar, missing required OPD (cylinders up to and including 40 lb), damage/corrosion, loose/damaged collar or foot ring, damaged valve.
